A small guide to ARL44. A small guide to ARL44 Tactics of playing on arl 44

Pros:
An excellent top-end gun (90 mm DCA 45) - penetration 212mm. and 240 average damage at level 6 is capable of performing miracles. With proper skill and knowledge, you can confidently break through heavy tanks even 8-9 levels.
Strong frontal armor of the hull - 120mm. at a good slope, it is able to withstand the blows of the same-level comrades, as well as the shots of some guns of stronger tanks. Ricochets are also not rare.
Good speed in a straight line - 750 hp. at 46-48t. - the tank gains and holds its 37 km / h.

Minuses:
Weak turning speed (both hull and turret) and maneuverability (this is our price for the gun and armor).
It is not difficult to break through the tower in the forehead, as well as in the front roller with damage.
Weak sides and stern, as well as a huge silhouette makes us easy prey at any distance.
Poor maneuverability, large silhouette, weak side and stern armor - increased love from artillery is felt immediately after leaving the shelter.

Tactics and specifics of application:
If we are in the top, everything is simple. We choose the flank along which we will push through and slowly push the opponents. It is better not to go out into the open area - art will immediately slam. So we learn to use the terrain or just drive in cities/villages.
It is also possible to hold the flank or base alone - accuracy and armor allow us to have fun anyway.
We remember the main thing: do not let anyone go to the sides or stern, as they break through all and sundry; let's not get bold in the area of shooting artillery.
It's also better to catch shells with your forehead and don't "dance" much - damage through the caterpillar passes with a bang.
If we are in the middle or at the end of the list, the main thing to remember here is that we can easily inflict damage on the enemy. An additional 2-3 shots with penetration will bring a lot more benefit to the team than a lone smoking pile of metal, spewing a stream of negativity on your plight and incomprehensible balance.
We have nothing to do on the front lines - we try to shoot from cover, inflict damage and escape from retribution. Ricochets from level 8 guns will be a pleasant balm for the soul (here you will have to masterfully “dance”). Always remember that 1-2 shots from top guns or a close splash from artillery will send us to the hangar in a matter of seconds.

Test of weaknesses and vulnerable points:
Terms:
1) ARL44 with the tower "ARL 44 nouvelle";
2) The enemy has only armor-piercing shells;
3) Only frontal armor was tested, since there can be no problems with breaking through the sides and stern.

Enemy weapon:
76 mm Gun M1A1 (Tank: T1 heavy)
Average penetration - 128.
Average damage - 115.
We received confirmation of the weak turret armor and excellent sloping hull armor.
There are also penetrations into the commander's hatch and the passage of a projectile between the hull and the turret (under the turret).

7.5 cm KwK L70 (Tank: VK 3601(H))
Average penetration: 150.
Average damage: 135.
The influence of armor penetration dispersion on the guns is immediately observed.
Penetration of the forehead of the hull every other time.

You decided to spend the pieces of silver earned with blood and metal and buy yourself ARL 44. And what did you get in return? And that's exactly what we'll talk about in the review of the ARL 44 World of Tanks video guide. Let's discuss what additional modules are best to put on this miracle of technology, what consumables to use and how to play this tank in general.

Having bought yourself this miracle of the French genius (may the VBR forgive me), you will see some kind of quiet horror in your hangar. In stock condition, this car looks just intimidating (or funny). If they said that they were carrying a birdhouse behind them, then the Frenchman captured the whole chicken coop. Looks like French tankers love to pamper themselves. But enough about that. You don't care about the chicken coop, sooner or later you will have to sell and turn your Harlequin into a normal tank with a normal turret and, what is important, with a normal gun. And, in the top condition - this is a typical TT and it should be used that way. Now you can safely drive out from behind the houses and fire at the enemy. It will be extremely difficult to break through you. Especially in the tower. The frontal projection of the tower is quite narrow and it is very difficult to break through it. The sides of the tower are located at such an angle that the attacker will often hear the word "Ricochet". Your upper frontal plate is also at a fairly large angle and ricochets will not be uncommon. And so, what do we have? Pretty good armored tank with high firepower. By the way, about the last one. It is the cannon that helps Ariel survive in battles. This is a very accurate weapon with good damage. For its level, having armor penetration of 212 mm is a dear mother. None of his classmates have one. With such a gun, you can safely shoot at everyone, and at ISs, and at Tigers. True, it is better to do this from afar, accuracy allows. But in general, the tactics of playing on this machine are no different from the tactics of playing on other 6 levels.

ARL 44 World of Tanks

Advantages and disadvantages

Pros:

  • a large number of HP;
  • thick frontal armor;
  • high firepower;
  • review;
  • there are booking screens;
  • large angle of vertical inclination of the gun;
  • long communication range with a top-end walkie-talkie.

Minuses:

  • slowness;
  • booking boards leaves much to be desired;
  • slow reverse;
  • unprotected tracks;
  • large dimensions.

Additional modules and equipment

Among the players, the most popular Harlequin assembly is ventilation, aiming drives and rammer. Such a set of modules will be the most optimal. For consumables, everything is quite prosaic: a first aid kit, fire extinguishers and a repair kit.

Today's review is dedicated to a car that deserves good feedback from players. It's about a French Tier 6 heavy tank. ARL 44.

How to play the ARL 44 tank in World of tanks

Unfortunately, the ARL 44 has a rather weak low-power engine, which, with a large mass, does not allow us to develop a good cruising speed and be at least sufficiently mobile. Therefore, when playing on ARL 44, you should not drive too far into enemy territory, because we simply may not have enough speed to leave the encirclement at the right time.

The frontal armor is formed by sheets of 120 millimeters located at an inclination of 45 degrees, unfortunately in the hull there is a vulnerable machine-gun nest. The tower has a massive gun mask, which protects our tank. Otherwise, the armor of the ARL 44 tank is mediocre, the thickness of the turret armor in all other projections is only 30 millimeters, which is very small for the fifth level. The side armor of the ARL 44 tank is 60 mm, and the rear armor is 40 mm. Try to hide the body of the tank behind indestructible objects - houses, stones, etc.

It turns out that ARL 44 turret vulnerable not only in front of many armor-piercing, but also in front of high-explosive shells, so in no case count on the armor of the tower and always try to show the enemy exactly the hull.

Some inconvenience when playing World of tanks on the ARL 44 is caused by the design of the tracks and the location of the tower, because. when you drive around the corner, you set up a caterpillar that the opponent can shoot down, you cannot resist him, because the tank turret is still behind the barrier.

Beware of fast opponents that will easily get close to your board. Given the slowness, beware of artillery strikes.

Characteristics of the ARL 44 gun in WoT

The ARL 44 gun differs significantly from the guns of its classmates, it can penetrate up to 212 millimeters of armor, which is more than enough at the sixth level. In addition, this gun has excellent depression angles, and the ARL 44 will excel in hilly terrain.

However, the gun also has disadvantages - for example, low aiming speed. Which once again confirms that the ARL 44 is not designed for fast and maneuverable battles in World of tanks. The best thing to do on the ARL 44 is to act more passively, statically, staying on the defensive more often. The accuracy of the gun, despite the long time of information, allows you to attack opponents from a long distance.

Modules

For a long time, information on the Arl 44 can be somewhat reduced by installing reinforced aiming drives. This tank is good for attacking from a long distance, so a stereo tube or coated optics will look great on it. The third module can be installed with a rammer or improved ventilation.

What Crew Skills and Perks to Research

First of all, the tank crew ARL 44 in WoT it is worth pumping repairs, as the ARL 44 tracks protrude forward, and the opponent can keep our car motionless for a long time and with impunity. For the commander, the first or second perk you need to choose the sixth. The second perk for the driver is best to choose the king of off-road, for the gunner a smooth turn of the tower.

ARL-44 is a French post-war tank destroyer project whose main purpose was to improve the skills of engineers after the end of the occupation. Although this tank did not have time to take part in the battles of World War II, it still played an important role in the development of French tank building. The experience gained during its development helped engineers for many decades to come.

Development of the ARL-44 began shortly after the liberation of France in 1944. The interim government elected at the end of the war sought to restore the country's former power and influence, which had been lost during the years of occupation. Among other things, this implied the restoration of the national armed forces. The situation by that time was far from being the best. Almost all the equipment and tanks of France were developed back in the thirties, and of the modern weapons, there was only equipment left by the Germans. That is why the decision was made in the Ministry of Defense to develop the so-called transitional tank. The creation of a new tank model pursued several goals at once. It was necessary to increase the fleet of armored vehicles, find a way to reuse existing tank parts, and also give engineers a chance to experiment and gain experience that is important for further work. That is why in November 1944 it was decided to develop a heavy tank with relatively modest characteristics. Representatives of several state design bureaus worked on the project, which received the code designation ARL-44.

According to the original specifications, the tank was supposed to receive 60 mm thick frontal armor and a 75 mm main gun. The design weight of the ARL-44 was 30 tons. In addition, it was necessary to provide for the possibility of using existing parts. Of course, this condition left the engineers too little freedom to introduce innovative technologies. That is why the tank began to resemble the pre-war Char B1 in everything except for the gun and turret. After the end of hostilities in 1945, development not only did not stop, but on the contrary, accelerated. The project received several notable modifications, including increased turret armor, a new engine, and a new 90mm gun. However, mass production of such weapons at that time was not possible. That is why the further development and release of an extremely limited batch pursued rather propaganda goals. In the post-war period, it was important to take care of the morale of the nation. A total of 60 vehicles were produced, and very soon, in the early fifties, these tanks were decommissioned due to unsatisfactory combat performance. Nevertheless, the project fulfilled its main task: the new generation of French engineers had the opportunity to gain experience in real development. Thanks to this, the first truly modern French main tank was created just ten years later. This proves that the development of the ARL-44 was not in vain at all.

In War Thunder, the ARL-44 will take its rightful place as a tank destroyer of the fourth rank in the new French branch of combat vehicles. Seeing the old-fashioned design, an uninformed player may think that he is facing a pre-war tank, much inferior to his own car. But you will have to pay for this mistake very soon: first, a message will appear on the screen stating that it was not possible to damage the target, and shortly after that, the most powerful ARL-44 gun will strike back with a crushing blow. The appearance of this tank is deceptive: a powerful combat vehicle is hidden behind its unsightly appearance. He owes this to both a rapid-fire 90-mm gun, capable of destroying almost any target that can be encountered in battle, and enhanced armor protection. And don't be fooled by the ARL-44's resemblance to its distant Char B1 ancestor. They have a very noticeable difference in booking. The thickness of the frontal armor of the hull reaches 120 mm. The tower, protected by 110 mm of steel, is slightly inferior. Incidentally, this is an interesting fact. Initially, the ARL-44 turret was supposed to be made of cast steel, but at that time no French factory could produce such armor. And then the engineers found an original solution, using the resources available at that time. From the surviving fragments of the armor of the Dunkirk battleship destroyed in Toulon in 1942, a turret for the ARL-44 was welded.

It was an excellent vehicle in terms of firepower and armor protection, but in terms of mobility, this tank left much to be desired. Even at an early stage of development, engineers were faced with the need to use an outdated and overly complex undercarriage, as well as tracks from pre-war tanks. For these two reasons alone, the ARL-44 developed a maximum speed of no more than 30 km / h. The tank engine was also far from ideal. The captured 600-horsepower Maybach HL 230 allowed the tank to reach maximum speed, but for such a heavy vehicle, its power was clearly lacking. The car accelerated very slowly. In battle, players need to keep this feature in mind at all times. Make major tactical decisions in advance, take a winning position from the very beginning, and then you will not have to rely on mobility. This will help eliminate one of the main drawbacks of the tank, at least temporarily. However, in tank battles, you will inevitably have to maneuver and move around the battlefield. Therefore, remember: the car will reach the target, but it will not set speed records.

Despite all its shortcomings, the ARL-44 remains a serious opponent for almost any tank. The inherent armor of heavy tanks, combined with powerful weapons, make it a dangerous competitor even for the recognized leaders of the game. The ARL-44 will appear on the battlefields of War Thunder in an update as part of the French armored corps. Follow the news and find out everything about the next major War Thunder update! See you later!

The French tank ARL 44, created at the end of World War II, can hardly be called successful. It combined a decent gun and frontal armor with an archaic undercarriage inherited from the Char B1 heavy tank that had been developed since the 1920s. The work on its creation lasted much longer than it stood in service with the French army. Nevertheless, its characteristic appearance will not leave indifferent fans of armored vehicles.

ARL 44 turned out to be huge. This tank is taller than the German Tiger II, and even in the spacious hall of the tank museum in Saumur it is cramped

The tank stands in the corner of the hall next to an even larger AMX 50-120. Therefore, it is very difficult to take a photo of the general view of the ARL 44

As you can see, the upper front hull plate of the ARL 44 is not empty.

The plate in the lower right corner of the front sheet indicates that this is the 29th car assembled at FAMH

The headlight is made according to the American type, with a marker headlight on top. The yellow color is not accidental - such headlights were on French military equipment until the end of the 50s

Sloths carried far forward - a family trait of the old man Char B

ARL 44 became the last production tank, on which the caterpillar belt goes around the hull

Trucks migrated almost unchanged from Char B

For the convenience of servicing numerous road wheels, the side screens are made removable

However, it was not easy to remove such a large section by the crew

Large hatches in the sides are another example of World War I anachronisms.

But the drive wheel looks quite in the spirit of the 40s

From the stern, the ARL 44 also looks more like a tank from the 40s.

The right fender of the tank is not empty

This strange design is nothing more than a muffler heavily corroded

The upper stern plate bears some features of the German tank industry

This is especially noticeable on the engine deck, where fans are installed.

From the end, the muffler looks no less specific

The central stern sheet is somewhat reminiscent of a similar detail of German tanks

The left side in its appearance completely repeats the right, including a large hatch

The left fender, unlike the right one, looks empty

The hatches of the driver and gunner-radio operator are made based on similar Panther hatches

The bottom of the ARL 44 is very similar to the bottom of the Char B

Many road wheels in the mid-40s were an outright anachronism

Oil leaks indicate that the engine in the tank has been preserved

Long barrel - one of the business cards of the ARL 44

The muzzle brake designer did not look for easy ways

The tower is welded, but at the same time its front part is made of cast

French Tier 6 heavy tank with rather strong sloping frontal armor, but weak side and stern armor. There is a choice between a powerful 105mm gun with low armor penetration and a weaker 90mm gun capable of penetrating even tier 10 tanks.

Predecessor of the seventh level heavy tank AMX M4 (1945).

combat effectiveness

This tank allows you to slowly push through the enemy defenses, support the attack of the allies, protect the base thanks to its armor, firepower and mobility. When you install a 105 mm gun on a tank, it becomes a full-fledged support tank - low armor penetration, high damage, good armor and low speed make you get closer to the enemy. With the DCA45 gun, the ARL-44 becomes an ambush heavy sniper tank due to its accuracy, armor penetration and gun damage. But even with him, ARL can help allies in close combat, targeting the weak points of the enemy. The tank also has screens - sometimes they save from artillery, but the tracks are almost unprotected, so often any hit of a high-explosive artillery shell near the tank knocks down its tracks. Elevation angles allow you to shoot from behind a hill at the enemy without showing him the body. The top radio allows you to keep abreast of events on the entire map. It is worth mentioning the dimensions and weight of the tank. The stock turret allows you to shoot from behind high cover, but is easier to hit. A large mass can help when ramming opponents.

Advantages:

  • High HP
  • Good forehead armor
  • Powerful and accurate guns
  • Good review
  • Availability of screens
  • Large elevation angles
  • Long range top radio
  • Big mass

Flaws:

  • Poor mobility
  • Weak side armor
  • Low reverse speed.
  • Unprotected tracks
  • high visibility

Crew and skills

Repair. It is better to learn repair as the first skill - after all, a repaired caterpillar in time can save a life, especially if the tank did not manage to drive behind the shelter in time.

Disguise. Since the tank does not burn often, you can learn camouflage with the second skill - after all, it is better when the tank is noticed at a closer distance, or not noticed at all from afar.

Firefighting. ARL 44 burns infrequently, so this skill can be learned last or not learned at all, but accumulate experience.

If the tank is a passing one, then instead of the first or second skill, you can simply gain experience after 100% of the specialty. If you accumulate about 36,000, then when retraining for silver at the Regimental School, the crew can retrain for a new tank up to 100%, not 90%.

Equipment, equipment and ammunition

Equipment

Offensive tactics:

  • Rammer - since the reloading of the top gun is rather slow, you can take a rammer - with it the tank will be even more effective.
  • Ventilation - since the crew of the tank consists of 5 people, you can install ventilation - it gives an increase to all crew skills by 5%.
  • Aiming actuators - the convergence of the top gun is relatively long, and since it is important to shoot at the right place with the top gun in time, it is recommended to use reinforced aiming drives.

Instead of drives, you can take a toolbox with you - the faster the damaged module is repaired, the better.

Defensive ambush tactics:

  • Camouflage net - the tank is quite noticeable, but standing still with a camouflage net, it is not so easy to notice it. It is especially effective to use the camouflage net along with the learned skill. Disguise
  • Stereo tube - standing still, you can significantly increase the view of the tank.
  • Coated optics or rammer - you can choose based on the situation. Since the view in the game does not exceed 445 meters, when using a stereo tube, the optics will improve the quality of the view - it will be possible to notice the camouflaged enemy at a longer distance. If the tank often moves to shelters, then the coated optics will save you from "invisibles" that fire at the tank from the bushes. If there is enough visibility with a stereo tube, then to improve the balance of the tank it is better to take a rammer, since the reloading of the guns is quite long.

Equipment

  • Repair kit - it is recommended to use for repairing weapons, because a damaged weapon will not allow the enemy to hit the right place, and a miss mistake can be expensive, especially with a top-end weapon.

The situation is similar with ammunition - increased reloading can be fatal. You can also repair the engine, because the tank is not the fastest, and a damaged engine makes the tank very slow and clumsy.

  • Armor-piercer- The top gun allows you to pierce even TT10
  • Changes in patches

    Update 0.7.2

    — the rotation speed of the first turret is reduced by 1 deg/sec;

    — the viewing range of the first turret has been increased by 5 m;

    — second turret traverse speed reduced by 0.75 deg/sec;

    — view range of the second turret reduced by 2.5 m.

    Hello, dear croissant lovers, the site is with you! On the agenda today is a vehicle that is quite different from the rest of the vehicles in its development branch, we will talk about a French heavy tank of the sixth level - this ARL 44 guide.

    The fact is that against the background of other French heavyweights, our hero really has armor for his level. Perhaps she is not as severe as we would like, but given the characteristics of her nation, ARL 44 TTX survivability is really worthy of respect. However, do not get ahead of yourself too much, let's be consistent.

    ARL 44 TTX

    To begin with, every owner of this heavyweight should know that among the heavyweights of the sixth level, we have the most modest margin of safety, but at the same time, the base viewing range is 350 meters, the result is decent, but needs to be adjusted.

    Now let's take a look, finally, what are the ARL 44 characteristics booking so that everything falls into place. So, in the frontal projection, the VLD is the most protected place. The thickness of this huge sheet is nominally 120 millimeters, but thanks to a good slope, we get about 180 millimeters of reduction. Such figures indicate that heavy tank ARL 44 can tank classmates, and with a slight turn of the hull, and some tanks of the seventh level, but there is no chance against eights.

    The forehead of the turret is much worse protected, there is less armor here (110 mm) and there is no slope, so when shooting here, even tanks of the fifth level can cause damage. An exception can be considered a small square of the gun mask at ARL 44 WoT, with a good share of luck, having received a slap in the face here, the damage will not pass.

    As for the security of the onboard projection, everything is much worse here. If, thanks to the massive gusli, covering almost the entire body ARL 44 World of Tanks, it will be possible to avoid the loss of durability points (which also happens very rarely), then the treacherously thin tower absorbs all the damage, and the land mines go into it with full penetration.

    There is another interesting fact. If you look at the collision model of the tank with the display of the suspension turned off, it becomes clear that there is a hull behind the front roller and shooting at it directly (from the forehead), guns with sufficient penetration will cause us damage. But caterpillars ARL 44 tank has unusual ones, they protrude strongly forward and if we shoot at the rink from the side without hitting the hull, no damage will follow, only the harp will fly off.

    The bright side of the coin can be considered the running characteristics of this unit. For a heavy tank ARL 44 WoT has a good maximum speed, very enviable dynamics, but the maneuverability here is poor, as is the turret rotation speed.

    gun

    Be that as it may, the main part of each combat vehicle can be considered a cannon and our weapons are truly amazing, with the exception of a few nuances.

    Top ARL 44 gun 90 mm caliber is a long-barreled gun that has not the best alpha strike, but in addition, a long reload time and a very modest 1450 damage per minute.

    However, the main advantage of this barrel is the best armor-piercing projectile penetration parameter among classmates. No matter what fight your heavy tank ARL 44, you can confidently punch through any opponent without using gold.

    True, there is another minus here - accuracy. The gun has a good spread, but it takes a very long time to close down, and it also has poor stabilization, which is rather unfortunate.

    However, our Frenchman is full of surprises and you have another weapon option to choose from - this is an alternative 105mm gun. The difference from the top one is that with this gun ARL 44 tank WoT has an increased alpha strike and a higher DPM, which is approximately 1700 damage per minute.

    But this barrel has poor armor-piercing penetration, and here another surprise follows. This weapon should be played only on gold, because in this case you will not have problems with penetration, and gold sub-calibers, pay attention, cause increased damage - 330 HP.

    As for accuracy, it is even worse, because our ARL 44 World of Tanks gets even more spread, however, the convergence time and stabilization remain the same. By the way, both with the first and with the second barrel, we have -10 vertical aiming angles, this cannot but rejoice.

    Summing up, I would like to say that the top weapon should be chosen by everyone who is not going to spend a lot of silver or gold. But if you don't have financial problems in the game, and you like unique gameplay, try to roll out ARL 44 tank with an alternative barrel, the effect will delight you.

    Advantages and disadvantages

    Well, all the main characteristics are considered, we also talked about weapons, so it's time to analyze the information received, highlighting the main strengths and weaknesses ARL 44 WoT. But for obvious reasons, please note that further information will be provided taking into account the fact that we have installed a top-end 90-millimeter gun on the tank.
    Pros:
    Decent booking of the forehead of the hull;
    Not a bad review;
    Good maximum speed and dynamics;
    Excellent penetration by an armor-piercing projectile;
    Comfortable vertical aiming angles.
    Minuses:
    Weak armor of the forehead of the tower and sides;
    Large dimensions of the tank;
    Mediocre maneuverability;
    Low rate of fire and DPM;
    Bad accuracy.

    Equipment for ARL 44

    There is nothing difficult in choosing additional modules for this strand, in fact, you just need to look at the main pros and cons of the machine. Of course, it is very important for us to improve the comfort of shooting, DPM, but we must not forget about the review, so on ARL 44 tank We will supply the following equipment:
    1. - with such a cooldown and low damage per minute, this module is vital.
    2. - the same applies to the speed of mixing, which in our case is very long, we set it without hesitation.
    3. - will allow you to increase your visibility well and even get around some classmates, which is no less important.

    But as you might have guessed, there is an alternative to the last point - this. It also makes sense to put it, because in this way we will be able to spur the DPM and the speed of aiming a little more. But you must understand that you will lose vision, so it is better to resort to this choice only with a pumped crew.

    Crew training

    Another extremely important point, thanks to which the game on this tank can become more comfortable and productive, but only on condition that all skills are distributed correctly. However, the choice will be standard for heavy and ARL 44 perks better to learn like this:
    Commander - , .
    Gunner -,.
    Driver mechanic - , .
    Radio operator -,.
    Loader - , .

    Equipment for ARL 44

    The next standard awaits you in the purchase of consumables, because here we look at our silver reserves and if you need to save money, we take it. However, when there is enough silver or gold, it is better to carry on ARL 44 gear from, . By the way, the latter can be changed to, the performance boost will not be superfluous, but you need to play more carefully.

    Tactics of the game on ARL 44

    In our hands is a rather strong vehicle with a very penetrating gun, good mobility for a heavy vehicle, and even armor is available here. However, first of all, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that in the case of ARL 44 tactics It really depends on what kind of fight you're in.

    If we are talking about the battle at the top of the list, here we can even tank and therefore we can go to the first line. Of course, you still need to behave carefully and protect your margin of safety. remember, that heavy tank ARL 44 has a long reload time, play from the alpha, do not expose the sides, but while holding back the pressure of the enemy, turn the hull slightly.

    But being in the middle and even more so at the bottom of the list, tactics change radically. ARL 44 tank World of Tanks can no longer rely on his booking, so our position is the second line. Here, after waiting for full information, you can easily hit even opponents of the eighth level, because the breakdown of the gun is excellent.

    At the same time, even having good mobility, one should not forget about their shed dimensions. When choosing a position, try to make sure that you are not noticed, and in case of light, it is important to provide cover from enemy artillery. Due to the fact that ARL 44 WoT has a very weak roof, a suitcase can fly to all HP.

    The rest of the rules are simple: keep an eye on the mini-map, save your safety margin and, most importantly, try to use the advantages of the tank. Thanks to good mobility, you can change directions, bypass the enemy or return to the defense of the base. Besides, ARL 44 World of Tanks got good vertical aiming angles, using them and playing from the tower you can also send the enemy to the hangar without losing your safety margin.

    How often people tend to really important and necessary things to connect with some mythological events, the sense of which is not worth a penny. Well, for example, to celebrate the anniversary of some event by launching a spaceship. Moreover, it would be nice if it was the anniversary of some space figure, but no: in our past it was most often “the day of the great October”. By the anniversaries, offensives were launched and the cities were taken by storm, although by waiting a little more success could have been achieved. They were in a hurry to release steam locomotives by “Day X”, pilots made their flights by the red dates. However, this was not only with us! In France, for example, even a tank was built in the interests of "big politics"! And not only built, but set up industrial production and only then made sure that "the shot was blind." What car are we talking about? Of course, about the ARL-44 tank - a heavy "tank between two times."

    ARL-44 at Mourmelon

    And it happened that although France was occupied by the Germans, the local engineers continued their work there, including on the projects of new tanks. Such work was also carried out by Schneider engineers and, apparently, the Germans were not at all interested in this. They carried out such an underground tank design, moreover, that no one canceled the production capacities of French factories, and they certainly knew well the technological capabilities of their production.

    And as soon as the Germans were driven out of Paris, in November 1944 the French decided to build their own tank! Here they are - ambition! Another part of the territory is still not liberated, but we will build our own tanks! The tank was supposed to be armed with a 75 mm SA 32 cannon, have a total weight of 35 tons and the same armor protection as the Sherman. The new tank had to be put into production without delay, without experimentation, without building a prototype. The total number of vehicles for the army is 500 tanks, and the monthly production is from 50 to 70 copies. And then the question arose: if such a hurry, then on what basis to make this tank?

    We decided to play “engineering cubes”: “take the lips of Nikanor Ivanovich and put Ivan Kuzmin to the nose, and take some swagger, which Baltazar Baltazarych has ...” - this is the principle that a new tank was created! B1 bis, for example, is well developed, but not up to date because the speed is limited. So, let's take from him what is good and add what is also good and, in addition, modern. However, the tank is still not a cardboard package and you can’t produce it so quickly. In addition, the French military realized that making a tank at the level of the Sherman is simply stupid, it’s easier to buy it!

    Therefore, they decided to make the ARL-44 tank so that it differed from the tanks of its English-speaking allies, and for the better!

    ARL-44, side view

    To do this, they decided to put 120 mm frontal armor, a powerful gun and an appropriate engine on it, but take the chassis from the time-tested and technologically proven B1 bis. Well, in order not to overload the industry with an order, they decided to build only 60 new tanks. After all, it was obvious that a new war was not expected, and it was unlikely that the USSR would throw its troops towards France through Germany. But even if this happened, it is clear that 60 tanks will not be able to protect it, and the Americans will have to take the rap for everything. But ... prestige, national pride and other beautiful words turned out to be more important in this case than common sense!

    B1bis from Samur

    The first prototype was assembled in March 1946, equipped with an ACL1 (Ateliers de la Loire) turret and an American 76 mm gun, which was immediately considered too weak. Then, a 90-mm DCA naval gun and a new Schneider turret were installed on the next vehicle. But none of the French engines fit. Therefore, they put the German Maybach HL230 with a power of 600 hp. With such a weapon, the French military decided to classify the new vehicle as a "tank destroyer" and were completely satisfied with this.

    Tower device

    The first tank of the series was released in the spring of 1947, after which a long period of vehicle testing began, which revealed a lot of shortcomings. Therefore, the tests continued until the end of the 1950s, and, nevertheless, not all problems with the new tank could be solved.

    Wooden model of the tank ARL-44

    The first 10 cars were shown at the parade on July 14, 1951, and they made an impression on everyone who saw them. It’s just that the first cars were put into operation only in October 1951, because driving through the parade is one thing, but serving in the army is something completely different. There have been multiple cases of broken fan drive belts and gearbox failure. Well, it was generally forbidden to shoot from a tank gun! The epic with the tank ended with the fact that already in December of the same year he was temporarily suspended from service. Then they calculated the cost of all its improvements and ... decided that it was easier to abandon it, which was done in the next year, 1952. Although, yes, it was the experience, so to speak, of returning to the "tank club"!

    ARL-44 in a museum in Samyur

    From a constructive point of view, it was an ordinary car - a hybrid car, but the “hybridity” was just interesting. Its weight was 48 tons, the crew consisted of 5 people. The designers turned out to be a large tank: length with a gun 10.52 m (hull length 7.15 m), width 3.40 m, height 3.20 m, that is, more than our pre-war T-35. Reservation of the lower and upper front armor plates was 75-120 mm. On the sides of the hull - 50 mm. On the tower in front - 110 mm. On the sides of the tower - 60 mm. The armor was quite modern, that is, the frontal armor had a large slope, did not have hatches, and the armor plate also covered the entire undercarriage, which was typical for French tanks of the 30s. Part of the armor plates were rolled and installed with large angles of inclination, a smaller part was made of cast armor, in particular, the gun mantlet. For some reason, the tank did not receive a commander's cupola, but it had a traditional door in the side between the tracks. These solutions were outdated. It's amazing how the French engineers did not guess to use this technical solution. After all, German captured tanks were at hand. They had American tanks in front of their eyes, but be that as it may, this tank never received a turret.

    The main armament consisted of a 90 mm cannon with a muzzle brake. The speed of an armor-piercing projectile was 1000 m / s. Ammunition: 50 shells. Machine gun armament: 2 machine guns 7.5 mm mod 31. Ammunition for machine guns: 5000 rounds. Tank engine - German Maybach HL 230 Type I, 12-cylinder 575 hp. (according to other sources - 760 hp) and worked on gasoline. For such a tank, its power was insufficient. The speed on the highway was only 25 km / h, (for others - 35 km / h) and the cruising range - 350 km (150 km). Thanks to its wide tracks inherited from the B1 tank, the ARL-44 had good cross-country ability (it is not known what its cross-country ability was on icy roads and on snow), took a vertical obstacle one meter high, ford 1.30 m deep, and a ditch - 2 , 30 m. The tank had a very high caterpillar bypass practically covering the hull around the perimeter, again, like the B1 and the English Churchill tank, although this did not give any particular advantages in increasing patency. In general, in fact, it was a kind of “French Tiger”, with a number of improved characteristics. But when this tank appeared, no one needed it. But everyone was able to make sure that France can still make tanks no worse than others! Well, on the example of the creation of this machine, all the others were able to make sure that it is, of course, possible to design tanks “from cubes”. But it's rather difficult to expect a breakthrough, some impressive success. Moreover, especially serious requirements in this case are imposed on the chassis and engine. Armor, although very important, does not work without a perfect running gear, as well as, however, a powerful gun!

    And I must say that this lesson was fully learned by the French designers, so the work on creating this tank did not pass without a trace for them either. Their famous tanks with “bobbing turrets” and automatic loaders and much more have appeared, but that will be a completely different story ...

    ARL-44 tanks on parade in Paris
